A senior official of the Ministry of Environment has warned the public against using expired soaps, shampoos and other beauty products saying they can cause serious health hazards, including cancer.

Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Standards and Specifications, said many people in Qatar are not aware of this fact.

“We have received calls from people asking about expired beauty products. Majority of the people believe expired beauty products have no impact on health. This is wrong. We want to tell the public that all beauty products have expiry dates on the packets. When expired, they become hazardous to health,” a local Arabic daily quoted Al Kuwari as saying.

He advised the public not to use any beauty product if they are expired or if the expiry date is not mentioned on the package.

These products contain chemical substances which can turn toxic after a certain period and infiltrate into blood through skin, causing cancer and kidney and liver ailments.

He said beauty products in the local market will soon have Qatari quality marks, while meeting GCC and international quality standards and specifications.

“Now we have beauty products of high quality in the market. Many importers are asking about introducing Qatari quality marks. We want to tell the public and traders that the Qatari quality mark is in the process of obtaining accreditation.

“Very soon we will announce the start of applications to obtain Qatari quality mark,” he added.

Al Kuwari said recently the ministry had stopped some beauty products from entering the Qatari market because they contained hazardous substances. They included black henna, hair dyes, shampoo and cologne.

“These products are being monitored and we have stopped them from entering the country,” said Al Kuwari.

He said all imported beauty products are required to have an authorised quality certificate showing that they don’t contain toxic or hazardous substances.

He said beauty products available in the Qatari market are free from hazardous materials and safe for use. The Peninsula

What about the beauty products which are sold bearing the expiry dates with offers like buy 1 get 1. Consumer intend or forced to buy that product which may be not be required until the expiry date. Such practices should be checked in the market and stopped being sold.

I think buy 1 take 1 promos on beauty products is beneficial for a group of people who use the products and to those people sending packages back home. As long as, expiry date is there then it's our responsibility, users, to maximize the use of it before it expires.
